HOW TO STAY ACTIVE ON HOLIDAYS

The warmer months are here, daylight savings has kicked in and many of you are planning or possibly already on holidays in this beautiful Tweed region I call home. I know when I am on holidays, it’s easy to get out of routine and I’m sure many of you are the same. It also means your movement may be put on the back burner in favour of relaxing, exploring or spending time with family and friends. This can lead to returning from holidays feeling sluggish and struggling to get back into a rhythm.

The good news is, there are a few great ways to incorporate movement into your holiday, that don’t feel like a chore and means you make the most out of seeing the place you’re in:

  1. Walking or Running- This is my absolute favourite way to see the place you’re in. Have a look on local Instagram pages or google great walks to do in your location. I always do this on the first morning of holidays and most of the time I end up finding a great coffee place or a hidden gem of a restaurant that I wouldn’t have otherwise known about.

  2. Cycling- so many hotels and air bnb’s have bikes for your use or there is often a bike hire place in town. Grab your friends or family and ride to brekky or even to the pub for lunch or dinner rather than jumping in the car. It is a great way to get some incidental movement in.

  3. Book a local class- there are so many wonderful exercise studios, you can open up google when you arrive and search “exercise near me” and you will be given a great list of options available. Book a couple of classes in for your holiday- that way they are already scheduled and you can book everything else around them. You will often meet some great locals in class as well, who can give you all the locals tips on things to do and places to eat.

  4. Do an online workout- Get your friends or family together or even go solo. All you need is a mat and your phone and head to the beach or in the room. There are some great props that are already in your accommodation that can really add a little spice to your workout- my favourites include a cushion, chair or benchtop. Try the express glutes workouts above for a 10 min burner.

Exercise or movement on holiday doesn’t have to be a chore, my hot tip is to do these things first thing after you wake up (of course that can be after a sleep in). Then you feel accomplished for the day and can get on with the more relaxing parts like reading, a massage or enjoying a delicious meal.
